drones to a green fleet, i expect similar policies to continue for my former colleague chuck hagel to be confirmed, hopefully as early as next week. for all these reasons i have long been a supporter of renewable fuels, and i encourage the further development of an industry that is important, both to our national security as well as to our farm economy. whether we're talking food or water or energy security, let me put it this way. in the future, more crops in the field can mean fewer soldiers in the field. at the same time, as important as our defense capabilities are, we also need to rebalance for the other free d's. the u.s. today spends more on defense than on diplomacy, democracy and developments all put together. meanwhile, in the past year, china has more than doubled its investment in developing new agricultural technologies. those are the kinds of farsighted policies that are enabling china to emerge as a world power, in which we, frankly, need to get back to. as we shift our focus and our resources towards smarter, more constructive forms of international interaction, it'
a thumbs up to chuck hagel's nomination for defense secretary. it clears the way for hagel's likely confirmation to that cabinet position. this is "cnn newsroom." i'm suzanne malveaux. we start with this, the blame game over those forced spending cuts heating up now. so is the political trash talk. in a news conference, a little while ago, john boehner accused the president of playing politics. >> the president has been traveling all over the country and today going down to newport news in order to use our military men and women as a prop in yet another campaign rally to support his tax hikes. now the american people know, the president gets more money they're just going to spend it. >> not to be outdone, house minority leader nancy pelosi fired back at republicans over the cuts. known in washington as sequestration. >> republicans say they're kicking the can down the road. i don't think they're kicking the can down the road. i think they're nudging the potato across the table with their nose. most don't know what the world sequester means. sequestration equals unemployment. sequest
to die. this week in addition to the chuck hagel defense secretary nomination, the senate is expected to advance president obama's nominee to head the cia, john brennan. senator john mccain is proposing holding up the nomination of john brennan because, well, john mccain. but even in the midst of that conflict, there is an interesting confluence of opinion right now that something major should be changed in mr. brennan's field of expertise. mr. brennan broached the subject in a "washington post" profile that ran about him last october. the acting director of the cia from whom mr. brennan would take over if he is confirmed, that acting director raised the issue in an article "the new york times" published about the cia in december. and now the man, the republican senator who is threatening to hold up the brennan nomination so the acting director has to stay on, this republican senator, he too says that he agrees that something big needs to be changed. >> what we really need to do is take this whole program out of the hands of the central intelligence agency and put it into the departme
on whether to end the filibuster on chuck hagel's nomination to be defense secretary. hagel is expected to be confirmed. >>> more evidence suggests that the secret to heart health is what you need. a just-published study finds eating a mediterranean style diet with nuts, olive oil, even some wine cuts cardiovascular death rights by 30%. spanish researchers ended the study early about five years into it, saying it would be unethical not to end the study. >>> okay, finally, a rap video featuring flashy cars, women in tight clothes, suggestive dancing, not unusual, but this rapper is 9 years old. unusual and using lyrics like coke is not a bad word. child welfare workers are taking a closer look at li'l poopy's youtube video. the boy's father told a boston tv station his son has done nothing wrong and police have not filed criminal charges or arrested the boy's father. a lawyer says it's freedom of speech. >> we have a lawyer on our panel, natalie jackson, outside the craziness, he's 9. that nice red car, he can't thrive that. the jewelry down to the belly button. i mean, child endangermen
